President of ADEX shared The President of the Republic’s expectation, Ollanta Humala

“WE NEED FAVORABLE CONDITIONS TO GET TO THE US$ 10 THOUSAND MILLION IN FOOD EXPORTATION”

Sunday, September 23, 2012.- the President of the Exporters Association (ADEX), Juan Varilias Velásquez, shared the expectations of the President of the Republic, Ollanta Humala Tasso, to have Peru reach US$ 10 thousand million in food exportation towards 2016, however He explained that in order to get that goal, it is necessary to guarantee favorable rules that allow the development of the sector Agro Industry and Fishing.

It is important to point out that estimation was announced by the President after the inauguration of the IV Expoalimentaria, organized by ADEX, with the support of Promperu, Agriculture Ministry, and Foreign affairs Ministry.  “It is a challenge that not only depends on the business effort but also the effort of all Peruvians”, He quoted.

To the general view, according to the conditions we have, we can expect that getting close to the  US$ 10 thousand million in food exportation would not be so complicated, considering that our growing tendency is of 20% annually, however it is necessary to consider the economic difficulties that The International markets are facing. To this we must add the lack of policies in the development of both sectors, that’s why a major emphasis should be added in the public-private work.

In regards to our productive capacity, Varilias estimated that the agro exportations use 550 thousand hectares. “A simple reasoning would tell us that we need approximately 500 thousand hectares of additional lands to duplicate the exportations, but it is counted to our behalf the investments done in products such as grapes and avocados, also lands that have been won by irrigation projects that could help us to increase the offer”, He stated.

He explained that there are approximately 200 thousand hectares of lands that will be acquire through running irrigation Project, but the majority will not be able to give offer before 2016; therefore, most of the effort should be focused on increase the productivity and to take  the best advantage of the Sierra and jungle lands through support programs to substitute crops, for example.

“Another important resource is the trained hand labor, which is still low. Therefore, it is important to have training Programs for the agro industry workers”, he added, He also mentioned the efficient water use issue, especially in the valleys where this resource is critical.

In the fishing sector, he explained that the consolidation of fish business and the sustained growing of the investment, have allowed us to get a high capacity of production, for that reason it is estimated that is an area with great possibilities to keep the tendencies up, especially because we can use better our water mirrors in the mountains and in the jungle.

Talking about the International demands, He stated that Asia is looking to Peru as a safe food provider to the world, therefore we have a market to develop, however this task needs set up activities that go from sanitary protocols elaboration to aggressive programs of promotion of our products.

“Besides, it is important the organization of the industry to do an efficient marketing job. We need to promote more efficiently the generation of exportable offer, we have the resources and the products to do it. But we also need to establish our marketing management. In both cases the Institutional infrastructure private-public is fundamental”. He quoted.

PERUVIAN COFFEE DEMAND IS FIVE TIMES SUPERIOR TO THE CURRENT OFFER

During the inauguration of “The corner of coffee and cacao”, The President of  ADEX spoke about the importance of Peruvian coffee and cacao in the International markets.

Thursday, September 20 2012 .-  Peruvian coffee has a five times more in demand than it is offered in the world right now. This shows that there is still a lot to do to increase the production and to increase the promotion of this product, it was stated by Juan Varilias Velásquez, president of the Exporters Association (ADEX).

He did explain that to the end of this year, Peruvian coffee sales to the foreign markets would drop in 30% (US$ 1,115 million) in comparison of  2011 (US$ 1,593 million), this would happen due to the low International prices and also weather problems in the production areas but not because of a low demand.

“We know that coffee is a commodity, however the added-value that is given to coffee is when it is organic or when the special coffees are organic having this commodity become a high quality product which is very high requested at the most demanding markets that know already its quality. He assured that during the event, The Minister of Production Gladys Triveño and the Internal assistant Director of USAID, Bruce Adams were also present attended this event.

He added that the International quality of the Peruvian coffee compared with the best of the world, has allowed the country become as the world’s number three of special coffee producer and number one exporter of organic coffee in the world.

CACAO

Regarding the cacao, he quoted that it is a product of high quality and importance for the country because it is located among the main products of our exportable basket, especially the organic one.

“Most of our exportations of cacao are supplies for other products. “In the corner of coffee and cacao” we are going to find companies that have given an added value to this fruit  developing finished products such as, chocolates with different concentrations of cacao, or mixed with other products of exportations” he said.

In July the cacao exportations increased in volume (19%) but decreased in (-12%) having a total of US$ 51 million in respect of the same period of last year, mainly due to low prices, because the demand has been up, especially of cacao in toasted grain.

In the “Corner of the coffee and Cacao” the effort of the present companies will be highlighted in their job of offering products of worldwide quality that leave the name of our country very high and motivate the visit of great buyers like we are going to find in this IV version of The Expoalimentaria fair.

Estimated President of ADEX, Juan Varilias Velásquez

Exportation of food items will grow 15% in 2012

  • In order to reach some goals it is necessary that authorities and the country close lines in the activities support of activities that are pillars of our development.

The exportation of food will grow 15% to the end of this year, this will bring up around US$ 6,400 million, demonstrating the defined attitude of the business men to keep the dynamism of our sales, in spite of the gloomy scene that exists in the world economy, informed the President of The exporters Association (ADEX)), Juan Varilias Velásquez, at his participation in the Press Conference to launch the EXPOALIMENTARIA fair of 2012.

However to fulfill this objective He stated that it is fundamental that the politics authorities and the country in general, close lines to support of the activities that are pillars in our development, “The exporters required the same conditions that have kept the growing of food exportations. The distribution of the entering it is not obtained by the law, it is obtained by shared efforts and objectives to distribute the benefits fairly, he sustained.

A clear example is that during the economical International crisis of 2008 – 2009, if the food exportation went through a contraction of 7.3%, right after it could recovery experiencing growing of 28% and 48% in the next couple of months, thanks to the effort of the exporters to wide their markets and to present innovating products.

“Facing the future, we keep the same faith and optimism. The statistics said that first fourth months of the year, we have decreased our growing, but in the case of the food the agroexportator year does not begin in January and does not end in December. The stationary state of the agro area determines that our exportations start growing since May, and reach their highest levels between July and December and then decreased in the first fourth months of the year”, he précised

About that issue he stated that in the May 2010 – April 2011 campaign, we grow in 37%, with a difference of last campaign of the same period, in other words, we keep the stable pattern in each campaign with the only difference that every time we start early in launching to the market.

The gremial representative commented that the shipping of Peruvian food items are equivalent to 55% of the non-traditional exportations and in 2011 (US$ 5,500 million) they represented 12% of the total exportations, making the second main activity in the country.

“We are a miner country, it is true, but we also are a food warehouse for the world”, stated Varilias. He commented as well, that the agro exportation became its highest dynamism in the last 10 years, when important investments were made in the area of the Agrarian Promotion Law, and encouraged by the agreements of free commerce that Peru celebrated in the last 5 years.

The Scotiabank-sponsored trade show, already recognized as the most important Latin American business platform for the food and beverage sector, is organized by ADEX with support from PromPeru, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and ProInversion.

Details concerning the event were provided to the public at a press conference attended by ADEX president, Juan Varilias Velasquez, and vice president, Carlos Lozada, the vice president of the ADEX Fishing and Aquaculture Committee, Jaime Bertie, PromPeru Director of Export Promotions, Alvaro Galvez, and Ambassador Jaime Pomareda, General Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Economic Promotion Division.

Lozada reminded the audience that business deals of USD 25 million and USD 69.1 million were made during Expoalimentaria I and II, in that order. “The matchmaking forum is very important because these types of meetings rarely happen in other international trade shows. This year, we expect deals to reach USD 140 million,” he stressed.

Ag and fishing

ADEX president Juan Varilias stressed the importance of positioning Peru as an international food provider, stating such facts as our country being the number one exporter of asparagus and paprika and the number one producer and vendor of cochineal as well as other relevant aspects.

He also said that export sector efforts, the opening of new markets, identification of new niche markets, and hosting mega-events like Expoalimentaria will encourage more traditional and non-traditional ag exports, which could translate into an increase in profits from USD 4.291 billion in 2011 to USD 10 billion by 2016.

“Over the past ten years, agricultural exports have grown by an average 21%, and so in 2004 Peru exported USD 1.122 billion worth of agricultural products and in 2008 USD 2.5 billion; after successfully coming through the 2009 economic crisis, we have made great strides to the point that this year we will break the USD 4 billion barrier,” he alleged.

Furthermore, Jaime Bertie, Fishing and Aquaculture Committee vice president, brought up that Peru is the third largest exporter of frozen scallops, seventh in all squid products, and eighth in trout filets.

“Historically, fishing is a very important sector on account of production of traditional goods for indirect human consumption, like fishmeal. Yet, Peru has lately been developing products for direct human consumption, such as squid, sardines, mackerel, tuna, scallops, shrimp, and others,” he added.

To the entire world
Expoalimentaria III attracts major buyers.

  •  We expect approximately 700 buyers from around the globe.
  • This will be the third consecutive Expoalimentaria for Goya Foods, and it will be there to meet with food suppliers.

We possess enormous potential to offer the world.”

Joining Goya Foods will be German outfits Riel Fruchthandel Ohl and Octopus Gmbh as well as the Promelior/Winny/Best Of Group from Belgium with members from Luxemburg and other countries. These will come in search of canned fruits and vegetables, ethnic and organic foods, frozen and canned fish, and fruit juices and pulps. From Canada Export Packers Company Ltd. (interested in asparagus, mangoes, strawberries, avocados, artichokes, and onions).

India is sending the Black Tiger Corporation to find suppliers of grains, seeds, cereals, and bean. From South Africa Bettafresh Food (looking to buy chili peppers, garlic, peeled tomatoes, capers, and hard cheeses). Coming in from Costa Rica is Corporacion Megadock S.A. wanting to find confectioneries, snacks, sauces, tapenades, and seasonings.

Similarly, several supermarket chains have decided to attend the trade show, such as Grupo Casino Global Sourging Americas from Santa Marta, Colombia (interested in tuna packed in olive oil, canned sardines, canned asparagus and artichokes, hake filets, and fresh cheeses), and Olímpica S.A. from Barranquilla, Colombia, Excelsior Gama from Venezuela, and E-Mart from South Korea (seeking suppliers of hydrobiological products and bananas).

Expoalimentaria III will run from September 28-30, 2011.
Expoalimentaria: the best of Peru’s food industry set out for the world to see.

  • It brings together the best of Peru’s food industry.
  • During Expoalimentaria II in 2010, some USD 70 million in business deals were concluded.

Peru is not just a country with an abundance of top notch tourist attractions, but it also possesses enormous exporting potential, particularly for added value food products. Expoalimentaria III is the showcase for such goods, and it will run from September 28-30 at the grounds of the Cuartel General del Ejercito (Army Headquarters) in Lima, Peru.

This mega-trade show is being organized by the Exporters Association of Peru (ADEX), with assistance from PromPeru and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and since its inception three years ago, it has become a major business platform where Peruvian and Latin American exhibitors can show off the best of their agricultural and fishing products, inputs, services, machinery, restaurants and cuisine.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend, among them being international and national buyers, manufacturers, suppliers, and professionals, and approximately 500 companies will set up stands to display their exports.

ADEX reports that nearly USD 70 million in business deals were made during Expoalimentaria II in 2010, a USD 45 million increase over the 2009 event, and that 800 buyers from 30 countries the world over took part.

Supplementary activities

Expoalimentaria III organizers have planned to carry out several seminars and conventions during the three-day event. One such gathering is the 4th International Convention on Organic Products, whose purpose is to inform participants on Peru’s current organic exports and its potential in that field as well as to provide them information on international market trends and opportunities.

Also on the agenda is the VI International Aquaculture Convention, which is organized to promote opportunities within that sector and to discuss related technological advances. Another important meeting is the 1st International Seminar “Emprende Peru”, whose speakers will talk about food consumption trends and the formation of new niche markets.

Expoalimentaria III will carry on the tradition started in 2010 and award companies for their initiative and novel products during the 2nd Innovation Contest, purpose of which is to promote and to boost Peru’s competitiveness in the agricultural and fishing export sector by recognizing the efforts of firms for meeting the needs of their partners.

This year’s trade show features a Food Festival that will display our cuisine that is already world known for its quality and diversity. Something new this year is the Pisco Hall, an area for renowned Pisco specialists to highlight all the different varieties of our flagship product. Last but not least, once again the Peru Natura Pavilion will be erected to exhibit natural products and ingredients.

Peru: endowed with numerous natural assets.

This South American country may become the world’s strategic food supplier.

  • Peru is the world’s leading asparagus and paprika exporter and the number two organic coffee exporter. It holds seventh place in mango and eighth place in artichoke exports.
  • Peruvian food sector companies (ag and fishing) will be exhibiting their best products to the world at Expoalimentaria III.

Just a few of the natural assets with which Peru is endowed and that are turning this South American country into one of the world’s major food suppliers are 1) its territorial waters, which simply teem with fish and seafood species, and its fertile valleys at different elevations that are ripe for farming, 2) having 28 of the 32 microclimates and 84 of the 104 life zones registered in the world, and 3) being located in the tropics, which grants it two harvests per year.

Juan Varilias Velasquez, president of the Exporters Association of Peru (ADEX), believes Peru is in the best possible position to do business with the world since it has entered into trade agreements with 57 very robust economies. What is more, Peruvian goods are being shipped to extremely active markets, and the country itself is highly capable of adjusting to emerging trends, like organic, functional, or nutraceutical products and new fruits and vegetables.

“Peruvian ag exporters have doubled their production over the past five years because of greater investment, innovation, and business creativity with 1480 companies registered in that sector, 13 of which boast annual sales greater than USD 10 million,” Varilias says.

In the ag sector alone, Peru has 1200 species of food plants, of which182 are domesticated and 623 are fruits. It is the world leader in potato, maize, capsicum, and Andean grain varieties. As for its fishing sector, there are 737 species of fish, 800 species of mollusks, and 300 species of crustaceans.

Varilias points out that Peru is the number one exporter of asparagus and paprika in the world and the number two organic coffee exporter and that it holds seventh place in mango and eighth place in artichoke exports.

“Farming will not slow down,” he says. “We are implementing projects, like the Olmos, Majes – Siguas, Rio Cachi, and Alto Piura, to name a few, which purpose to irrigate 95,000 more hectares.”

He goes on to say that in that context and with that potential in mind, ADEX is collaborating with PromPeru and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize Expoalimentaria III, which will run from September 28-30, 2011, on the grounds of the Cuartel General del Ejercito (Army Headquarters).

“We have great expectations for Expoalimentaria. Last year, over 20,000 people visited the trade show, some of them representing buyers like Woolworths (Australia), Lablow and Dollarama (Canada), Supermercados del Sur, Unimarc, and Walmart (Chile), Migros Supermarket (Switzerland), Ketal Supermarket (Bolivia), Almacenes Exito (Colombia), Carrefour (Brazil), and Supervalu (U.S.A.).

Major importer has confirmed it will take part in Expoalimentaria

374 EXHIBITORS HAVE ALREADY REGISTERED TO ATTEND THIS YEAR’S TRADE SHOW

Just three months remain before the opening of Expoalimentaria, and several Peruvian and international companies have already confirmed their attendance at this major food sector event. This will be the third consecutive year that Peru and the region’s food industry showcase the best of their products. This important event is organized by the Peruvian Exporters Association (ADEX) with support from public institutions, the likes of PromPeru, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Peru’s Private Promotion Agency- PROINVERSION.

“ADEX reports that 72% of stand space is already claimed as a result of the aggressive ad campaign geared towards making Expoalimentaria a resounding success. That percentage represents 374 spots, 247 to Peruvian and 127 to foreign companies that hail from every corner of the globe, including major firms like Goya Foods, one of the world’s largest food importers and participant in past Expoalimentarias.

Exhibitors that represent agroindustrial products form the largest bloc with 159, followed by machinery and equipment with 76, services 48, fishing 28, and packaging 12, and a handful of others that complete the balance.”

ADEX’s Marketing Department publicized the event to the management of Peruvian companies by organizing working breakfasts in cities around the country: Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Tacna, La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Piura, and obtained significant results.

Another publicizing event was an ADEX-led working meeting in which the Association’s president, Juan Varilias Velasquez, urged the attending embassies and commercial attachés (Costa Rica, Finland, Brazil, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama, Cuba and Portugal) to commit themselves to the trade show in order to guarantee its success.

Expoalimentaria 2011 will take place from September 28 – 30 at the Cuartel General del Ejercito (Army Headquarters) and house 519 stands, 25 of which form the Peru Natura Pavilion that showcases the country’s natural products.

During the trade show, several important meetings and conventions will take place, namely the 4th International Convention on Organic Products, the 6th Aquaculture Convention, and the 1st International Seminar “Emprende Peru”, through which new trends and demands in food consumption will be introduced and new niche markets thus identified.

Moreover, this year’s show features a Food Festival in which renowned chefs will demonstrate how to make the most delicious and exquisite dishes made with products Peru exports. A novelty for this year is the “Pisco Hall”, an area for Pisco specialists to highlight all the different varieties of our flagship product.

We will continue driving the Business Conference for the purpose of allowing participating companies to identify opportunities and to close business deals. Also, don’t miss out on visiting the Peru Natura Pavilion and Innovation Hall, where all the winners for new products and processes in the agricultural and fishing sectors are on display.

  • 1.120 appointments were made in which Peruvian exporters presented their products to international buyers who came from a total of 29 countries.

The second edition of the Expoalimentaria 2010 fair met expectations in terms of exhibitors and foreign buyers, as well as commitments of trade reaching U.S. $ 69.1 millions, reported the Exporters Association (ADEX), organizer of the event.

By way of detail, the business association explained that the number of business rounds held at the mega-event market were 1.120, in which Peruvian exporters presented their products to international buyers. A total of 74 companies from the agro sector had 626 appointments, other 47 companies from the agro/fishery sector participated in 418 meetings and the remaining 10, from the fishery sector, had 76 meetings.

International buyers came from countries on the five continents like the U.S., Mexico, India, Netherlands, Japan and South Africa. Some of them were Goya Foods, Carrefour, Walmart, Woolworth, Almacenes Exito, and more.

Doubtless, Expoalimentaria 2010, developed from September 22 to September 24 at the Pentagonito, became the meeting point for buyers of food from around the world who were attracted by the variety and quality of agricultural and fishery products offered by big, medium, and small companies and even by organized communities from all regions of the country.

During the three-day fair, whose organization had the invaluable support of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Promperú, and the sponsorship of Scotiabank, 402 exhibitors participated, 305 of them were nationals and 97 foreigners from 29 countries like Ecuador, U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Germany among others.

52% of participants belonged to the agribusiness sector, while 4% to the fishery sector. The service sector companies were also present with 26%, machinery and equipment with 13% and packaging with 5%.

A special highlight is that from the last year total participants, 126 exhibitors, “repeated the course”, appearing again at Expoalimentaria, while the remaining 274 exhibitors participated for the first time. It should be indicated that the 126 companies that participated for the second consecutive year represented more than 60% of participants at Expoalimentaria 2009.

We must also remember that the fair, the result of labor between the public and private sector, not only was characterized by a large commercial showcase of food, but also by important thematic forums: III International Convention of Organic Products, V National Aquaculture Convention, and II International Seminar on fresh and processed Fruits and Vegetables that were developed during the three-day event, with the participation of national and foreign exhibitors.

FRESHFEL EUROPE PRESIDENT RAMON REY ADRESSES PERUVIAN FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SECTOR

As Peru and the EU are moving towards a new trading environment under the recently signed free trade agreement (FTA), Ramon Rey, President of Freshfel Europe, addressed the leaders of the Peruvian fruit and vegetable sector on the occasion of the International Seminar on fruit and vegetables held during Expoalimentaria Peru in Lima on 24 September 2010.

Ramon Rey, President of Freshfel Europe was invited to speak in Lima to business representatives on emerging trends for the Peruvian fruit and vegetable sector. This event took place at a particular moment where the EU and Peru are moving towards a new area of trade relationship. Indeed, an agreement concluding several months of intense negotiations was reached in Madrid earlier this year between the EU and Peru to implement a free trade area between the Andean country and the EU. The FTA agreement is now under ratification process and should be phased in towards the end of next year.

In anticipation of this agreement, Peruvian exports to the EU already experienced a significant growth in the last 5 years. The volume of the top 5 products exported by Peru to the EU are now over 150.000 T with a value close to 250 million €. Today, Peru exports to the EU amount to 30.000 T of asparagus, 40.000 T of avocados, 35.000 T of mangos, 25.000 T of soft citrus and 15.000 T of table grapes. “While the Peruvian exports already enjoyed today preferential tariff conditions under the GSP+ scheme, the new free trade agreement could provide an even improved business environment and lead to new opportunities for the Peruvian sector in the EU offseason market” stated Ramon Rey during the conference.

The EU market is a demanding and competitive market imposing suppliers to cope with the highest level of legislative provisions and strict customers’ requirements. These developments are today important prerequisites for business but need however to remain within the boundaries of sustainable conditions gearing towards the primary objective of increasing quality, taste and nutritional value of produce place on the market.

While considering expanding their fresh produce exports to the EU-27, Peruvian growers and exporters should take these prerequisites into account. Mr Rey continued: “It is important that food safety and environmental requirements are harmonized to avoid confusing growers, trade operators and consumers but also to refrain the sector from unnecessary costs relating to the proliferation of schemes. This is relevant for all suppliers including those in the EU but also particularly crucial for emerging suppliers outside the EU such as Peru. Suppliers from around the world should focus their efforts and investments to reach the highest quality and taste to satisfy consumers and stimulate them to eat fresh produce in particular in time of economic crisis in Europe where consumption remains stagnating”.

Peru is today the n°1 supplier of asparagus and avocados to the EU import market. The EU imports close to 35.000 T of asparagus every year, out of which over 80% are originating in Peru. In regard to avocados, 190.000 T are imported into the EU, Peru enjoying a market share of 23% just before Chile which contributes to 21% of the EU imports. In total, Peru is a net exporter of agricultural products to the EU with an aggregate business value of 1,4 billion € while the EU only exports agriculture products for a value of 65 million €. Ramon Rey concluded: “At Freshfel Europe, we reckon that the new FTA will be an opportunity to develop trade in a bilateral and reciprocal way allowing trade in fruit and vegetables to develop both ways, responding to market dynamics as well as to quality and taste demanded by consumers”.

Peru becomes great business platform

EXPOALIMENTARIA 2010 WILL BE THE SHOWCASE FOOD FOR THE WORLD

  • It will take place at the Pentagon from September 22 to September 24 bringing together a total of 400 Peruvian and Latin American exhibitors, from fisheries and agricultural sub sectors.
  • There will be specialized conventions, business conferences and events in which our cuisine will be highlighted.

Following the success of the last year Expoalimentaria fair, with the presence of more than 400 foreign buyers, the attendance of more than 7,000 visitors and commercial operations that exceeded U.S. $ 25 million, the Exporters Association (ADEX) with the support of Promperú and the Ministries of Agriculture and Foreign Affairs and Scotiabank sponsorship, is giving the final details to the second version of this fair to be held from September 22 to September 24 at the General Army Headquarters, the Pentagon.

And, if last year foreign buyers were impressed by the variety and quality of our food products yet unknown in many parts of the world, this time, the food supply will be much greater, both in variety and quantity since the number of exhibiting companies increased from 205 to 400, in which we hope to find 100 foreigner companies.

The president of ADEX, Juan Varilias Velasquez, said the Expoalimentaria 2010 becomes the most important business platform for Latin America since a full display of agricultural, agroindustrial and fisheries products from different regions of the country will be shown, as well as equipment, machinery, and packaging for the food processing industry, restaurants and cuisine in general.

A point to highlight is the increase of exhibitors in more than 90%. International buyers increased by 60%, from 450 to 700, while the number of visitors, and are expected to grow by more than 80%, from 7.500 to 14.000, including national and international visitors.

Other complementary attractions that have been planned for the exhibitors and visitors are the business rounds, conventions and seminars such as the Third International Convention of Organic Products, the Fifth National Aquaculture Convention and the Second International Seminar on fresh and processed Fruits and Vegetables.

In the same way, to promote our cuisine to visitors, ADEX is organizing the Peruvian cuisine festival to be held during the three-day fair with the support of the Peruvian Society of Gastronomy (Apega). There will have live demonstrations and tasting based on our agricultural, agroindustrial and fisheries products, in charge of renowned chefs.

More opportunities
The Expoalimentaria is an important opportunity to do business with international buyers, even more so when one considers the extraordinary weather conditions and varieties Peru owns for both agricultural and agroindustrial production. Another point to highlight is that the outcome will be, once again, the strategic alliance between the public and private sector.

During the press conference where the official launch of the Expoalimentaria took place, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Martin Perez, described as very rewarding the willingness of both parties (public-private sector) to carry out such an important initiative. He also said that Peru has a huge export-oriented vocation since our non-traditional exports rose from U.S. $ 2,000 million in 2000 to U.S. $ 7.500 million in 2008, even though in 2009 the was a drop “however, we are confident that this years we will return back to the same level”, he said.

On the other hand, the Minister of Agriculture, Adolfo De Cordova said the Expoalimentaria 2010 is an adventure that began last year and Peru, being an agricultural exporter and one of the leading exporters in organic bananas, second in cocoa and coffee, without a doubt this event will allow agricultural producers to diversify their offers and destinations.

The president of ADEX, Juan Varilias Velasquez estimated that this second version of the Expoalimentaria can generate business for U.S. $ 50 million, but in the long term this figure could be much higher. Similarly he remarked the increase of the fairgrounds area which will be doubled. “We estimate the attendance of 14,000 both international and national visitors and we will gather the exportable offer of 400 exhibitors, of which 100 will be international”, he said.

As parallel events at Expoalimentaria 2010 we will have the Third International Convention of Organic Products, the Fifth National Aquaculture Convention and the Second International Seminar on fresh and processed Fruits and Vegetables. Also the Food Festival the Hall of innovations and technological developments, product launches and technical conferences by exhibiting companies will take place at the fair.

2009 Expoalimentaria
Remember that the Expoalimentaria 2009 brought together 205 exhibitors, 7000 both national and international visitors, of which more than 400 buyers were foreigners from the five continents: South America (40%), North America (29%), Europe (21 %), Asia (5%), Central America and the Caribbean (4%) and Africa and Oceania (1%). These figures exceeded drawn expectations.

This year, the agroindustrial and fisheries sector represented the 70% of the fair, followed by the machinery, services, equipment and packaging sector to 29%. According to reports provided by 31out of more than 400 international buyers, business expectations exceeded U.S. $ 25 million.
